How to connect Premiere Pro to Claude and ChatGPT with MCP
By Lev PerlmanUpdated 6 min read
To connect Premiere Pro to Claude or ChatGPT, install an MCP server for Premiere, add its panel inside Premiere, then register the server with your assistant: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, or Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app. Adobe does not make an MCP server for desktop Premiere, so every option is an independent open-source project. This guide compares them, walks through the setup for each assistant and covers how to use one safely.
Adobe now calls the desktop app Adobe Premiere.1 Everything here applies to it.
What MCP is, in one paragraph
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant use tools on your computer. An MCP server exposes a program's actions, in this case Premiere's scripting functions, and an MCP client such as Claude Desktop calls them when you ask for something in plain English. The assistant can only do what the server exposes, and the server acts with your user account's permissions.2
What Adobe offers, and what it does not
- No official MCP server for desktop Premiere. A request for one on Adobe's community forum, opened in September 2026, had no response from Adobe when we checked.3
- Adobe for creativity, a connector for Claude. Launched in April 2026, it draws on tools from Photoshop, Illustrator, Firefly, Express, Premiere and others,4 and works in Claude chat, Cowork and Claude Desktop.5 Adobe's examples work on media you upload, such as reformatting a horizontal clip for Shorts or Reels.5 It does not describe controlling your own Premiere project, so for timeline work you need one of the servers below.
- Premiere AI Assistant (beta), inside Premiere. Adobe's own assistant helps organise bins, transcripts, markers, stringouts and rough assemblies. Adobe says it is not yet recommended for client work.6
The community MCP servers
Three open-source projects are the most used. All are MIT-licensed and none is made or endorsed by Adobe. Figures are from GitHub on 14 October 2026.
| Project | GitHub stars | Bridge into Premiere | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| premiere-pro-mcp | 376 | CEP panel (UXP optional) | Premiere 2020 to 2026, Mac and Windows. Ships a Claude Desktop extension and a connection checker.7 |
| Adobe_Premiere_Pro_MCP | 687 | CEP panel (UXP experimental) | A large tool catalogue. Telemetry is on by default and can be turned off; the Claude Desktop bundle is unsigned.8 |
| adb-mcp | 724 | UXP plugin plus a local proxy | Covers several Adobe apps. Its author calls it a proof of concept, and it assumes a single sequence in Premiere.9 |
For most people, premiere-pro-mcp is the easiest to set up and check, so the steps below use it. The others follow the same pattern: install the server, load the panel in Premiere, register the server with your assistant.
What you need
- Adobe Premiere installed and open with a project.
- Node.js 20.19 or later, for the npm route.7
- An assistant that supports local MCP servers: Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Codex.
- A copy of a project to experiment on. The project's own advice is to start with a disposable project.7
Connect Premiere to Claude Desktop
- Install the Premiere panel. Run
npm install -g premiere-pro-mcp, thenpremiere-pro-mcp --install-cep, thenpremiere-pro-mcp --doctorto check it.7 - Open the panel in Premiere: Window > Extensions > MCP for Adobe Premiere Pro.7
- Add the server to Claude Desktop. Either download the
.mcpbextension from the project's Releases page and install it with Settings > Extensions > Advanced settings > Install Extension,710 or open Settings > Developer > Edit Config and add:27
{
"mcpServers": {
"premiere-pro": {
"command": "premiere-pro-mcp"
}
}
}
Then quit Claude Desktop completely and open it again.2 Start with the project's suggested first prompt: "Safely check my Premiere connection with verify_premiere_connection. Make no changes."7
If Claude does not see the server, the logs are in ~/Library/Logs/Claude on a Mac and %APPDATA%\Claude\logs on Windows.2
Connect Premiere to Claude Code
After steps 1 and 2 above, register the server with claude mcp add:11
claude mcp add premiere-pro -- premiere-pro-mcp
Connect Premiere to ChatGPT
- ChatGPT in the browser cannot connect directly. OpenAI says ChatGPT connects to remote MCP servers, not local ones, and that custom MCP apps are web only and on selected plans.12 Premiere MCP servers run on your own computer.
- Codex can. Codex, in the ChatGPT desktop app, the Codex command line and IDE extensions, supports local MCP servers, and all three share one configuration file.13
After steps 1 and 2 above, add the server to ~/.codex/config.toml:13
[mcp_servers.premiere_pro]
command = "premiere-pro-mcp"
Or run codex mcp add premiere_pro -- premiere-pro-mcp.13
Useful jobs for a podcast edit
The assistant can only do what Premiere's scripting allows, so it is best at organising and repetitive work. For a podcast, try:
- "Rename the clips in the Cameras bin after the person in each one, using these names: …"
- "Create bins for Host, Guest, Wide and Mics and sort the clips into them."
- "Add a marker at each of these timecodes with these topic names: …" Then use the markers for chapters and show notes.
- "Duplicate the Episode 12 sequence as a vertical 1080 × 1920 version." A starting point for Shorts.
- "Queue an export of the Episode 12 sequence to Adobe Media Encoder with the YouTube preset."
Know the limits. The premiere-pro-mcp project notes that some edits, such as ripple delete and razor, are silently ignored on Premiere 26.3, that it cannot set speed or reverse, and that it cannot see rendered pixels after an export.7 Another project notes that Premiere 26 has no scripting API for removing effects.8 Check the result of every request in the timeline.
Staying safe
- Use a copy of the project until you trust the setup.7
- Remember what it can reach. An MCP server runs with your user account's permissions and can do any file operation you can.2
- Only install servers you trust. OpenAI and Anthropic both warn that untrusted MCP servers increase the risk of prompt injection.1211 Read a project's README, check how recently it was updated, and prefer signed extensions.
- Check telemetry settings. At least one project sends usage data by default.8 Turn it off if your organisation's policies require it.
- Mind the content. If your project contains guests' recordings or transcripts, the assistant's provider will process what it reads. Check that your agreements with guests and your privacy notice cover it.
Watch it done
Where podswitch fits
An assistant can organise and export, but it does not watch the conversation and decide who should be on screen. That is what podswitch does: it cuts the multicam edit from each speaker's microphone and opens it in Premiere as a sequence with one track per camera, ready for you, or your assistant, to finish. See how to edit a podcast in Premiere Pro for the full workflow, or the DaVinci Resolve MCP guide if you also edit in Resolve.

Common questions
Is there an official Adobe MCP server for Premiere Pro?
Not for the desktop app, as of October 2026. Users have asked Adobe for one on its community forum. Adobe's Adobe for creativity connector for Claude includes some Premiere tools, but it works on media you upload rather than controlling your Premiere projects.
Can I connect Premiere Pro to ChatGPT in the browser?
Not directly. OpenAI says ChatGPT connects to remote MCP servers, while Premiere MCP servers run on your own computer. Use Codex instead, through the ChatGPT desktop app or the Codex command line, which can run local MCP servers.
What can an MCP server do in Premiere Pro?
Whatever Premiere's scripting allows, such as organising bins, creating sequences, adding markers, placing clips and queuing exports. Community servers list limits, for example some edits being ignored on recent versions, so test on a copy of a project.
Is it safe?
Treat it like giving someone access to your computer. Community servers are not made or supported by Adobe, the server runs with your user account's permissions, and untrusted servers raise the risk of prompt injection. Use a copy of a project and check every change.
